How to Prepare Your Home for Another Lockdown

The news of another lockdown has brought anxiety to many people. Some of us may be living alone, some caring for young children whilst working at home and some worried about their jobs or businesses. Whilst the future seems so uncertain, there are steps you can take to make your home as comfortable as possible and to take care of your physical and mental health.

Set-up a Functional Work Space

Try to have a dedicated area for work, so you can create a clear distinction between work time and personal time. Even if it’s only a space on your kitchen or dining table, keep work papers separate in a box or tray you can put out of sight at the end of the working day.

Don’t take work into your bedroom! Keep your bedroom as a work-free zone and it will be easier to switch off at the end of the day.

Take a Walk

Get outside for a walk. It will boost your mood and help you feel less sluggish. Eve a little daylight is beneficial to improve your mood.

Make time to connect with people, whether that’s a family Zoom or Facetime or an outdoor walk with a friend. Studies show that real life interactions are important for our mental health, but during lockdown we miss those small exchanges with our co-workers or friends we see at the gym or travelling to work. Making sure to keep in touch with your friends and family will help you feel less overwhelmed.

Exercise

Try to find time to exercise. Explore group classes offered through Zoom- many studios are offering free trials and many instructors are offering pay what you can options. If you’re used to a regular exercise routine, letting it slip during lockdown can impact your energy levels and mental health, so find ways to stay active at home. However, don’t beat yourself up if you feel you need a break.

Lit up a Lamp

As the nights draw in and it’s dark earlier, a lamp which mimics daylight or an alarm clock which wakes you up gently can be a great choice when spending more time indoors.

Set Personal Growth Goals

Don’t attempt a big clear out or ambitious weight loss project if you feel overwhelmed. Setting unrealistic goals to make the best use of the time could lead to more stress. Take note of the things that make you feel better, whether that’s cooking nourishing food or a walk with a friend. Save the self-improvement projects for when you have more energy and times are less stressful.

Dress Up

Get dressed every day! It may sound simple, but changing from your pyjamas to comfy sweats will make you feel set up for the day. Embrace the new comfortable work-from-home look – it means less ironing and less dry cleaning for us all.
